Broker vs Direct Supplier
Why Direct Sourcing Matters
Most rice "suppliers" in Pakistan are trading houses that source from third-party mills. Here is what changes when you work with the mill directly.
What to Compare
Broker / Trading House
HAS Rice Pakistan (Direct)
Facility ownership
Sources from third-party mills. No direct control over processing.
Own 150 MT/day mill in Karachi. Paddy intake through container stuffing under one roof.
Quality control
Relies on mill's internal QC. Limited ability to adjust specifications mid-order.
Direct control over broken percentage, moisture, polishing, and color sorting. 99% first-pass inspection rate.
Pricing transparency
Mill price plus broker margin (typically $10-$30/MT). Margin rarely disclosed.
Mill price FOB Karachi. No broker layer. Current ranges published on prices page.
Inspection access
Inspection happens at a third-party mill the buyer has not verified.
Pre-shipment inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek at our own facility. Buyer visits welcome.
Documentation
Broker prepares documents. Certificate of origin traces to the broker, not the mill.
Full document set issued by HAS Rice Pakistan: invoice, packing list, B/L, COO, phytosanitary, fumigation, quality certificate.
Response time
Requires broker to check with mill. Delays of 24-72 hours on pricing and specifications common.
Confirmed price within 24 business hours. Direct WhatsApp line to export desk.
Liability
Broker holds contract. Dispute resolution requires an intermediary.
Single contract with the processor. Clear accountability for quality, timing, and documentation.
Due Diligence
How to Vet a Pakistan Rice Supplier
Use this 8-point checklist before signing a contract with any Pakistan rice supplier. Skip steps at your own risk.
ISO 22000 and HACCP certificates with validity dates. Not just logos on a website. Ask for the PDF certificates with issue date, expiry, and the certifying body name. Cross-check the certification number with the issuer.
REAP membership verification. Only Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan members can legally export rice from Pakistan. Verify membership number on reap.com.pk before signing any contract.
GACC registration for China. Required for any shipment to China since 2022. Ask for the GACC registration number and verify it on the China Customs website. Without GACC, your shipment will be rejected at the destination port.
Physical mill address and video tour. Ask for the exact factory address and a live WhatsApp video tour of the processing floor. A broker cannot show you a mill they do not own.
References from existing buyers. Request 2-3 references from buyers in your region or a similar market. A legitimate supplier will provide contacts. Follow up directly with those buyers to confirm shipment history.
Pre-shipment inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek. Confirm the supplier accepts inspection from any of these three bodies. Ask for a sample inspection report from a recent shipment to see the inspection detail and first-pass pass rate.
L/C at sight capability. A supplier that refuses L/C at sight and only accepts T/T advance is a warning sign. Legitimate exporters work with L/C at sight for new buyers because it protects both parties.
24-hour quote response. A direct supplier can quote within 24 business hours because they control the pricing. Delays of 48-72 hours usually mean the supplier is checking prices with a third-party mill.

Supplier FAQ
Common Questions
Look for suppliers with their own processing facility (not brokers), ISO 22000/HACCP certification, REAP membership, and a track record of pre-shipment inspected shipments. Request references from buyers in your market. Verify GACC registration if importing to China. Visit the mill if possible.
Ask for a physical mill address and request a live WhatsApp video tour of the processing floor. Verify REAP membership on reap.com.pk. Check GACC registration on the China Customs website if importing to China. Ask for the names of the three inspection bodies they work with (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek). A direct supplier can answer questions about paddy intake, milling grades, and processing specifications without referring you elsewhere.
Request: ISO 22000 and HACCP certificates with validity dates, REAP membership certificate, GACC registration (for China), company profile and export license, a sample proforma invoice showing your exact specifications, references from current buyers in your region, and a pre-shipment inspection report from SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek from a recent shipment.
Direct suppliers pass on mill pricing without broker markup, have clearer traceability from paddy intake to container stuffing, and can adjust processing specifications (broken percentage, polishing, packaging) without intermediaries. Quote variance of $10-$30/MT is typical between direct mill pricing and trading house pricing. The real value is control over quality, timing, and documentation.
