Broken Grades

Understanding Broken Percentage

Broken percentage refers to the proportion of broken kernels in the batch. Lower broken = higher price. Different markets and uses require different grades.

5% Broken
Premium grade with minimal broken kernels. Suitable for retail packaging and food service. Highest price point in non-basmati. Silky polished and sortex cleaned.
15-25% Broken
Mid-range grade for wholesale and redistribution. Lower price point. Popular in East African and South Asian markets for everyday consumption.
100% Broken
All broken kernels. Staple food in West Africa (Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau). Also used in brewing and food processing. Lowest price point.
Brown Rice
Husk removed, bran intact. Imported by EU rice mills at lower tariff for re-milling. Also sold as health food in retail markets. Same price range as 5% white.
