Report shows 10 million unmarried Pakistani women above 35 years old

More than 100 million women aged 35 and above in Pakistan are currently awaiting marriage, according to a recent United Nations report. This alarming trend highlights the gravity of the issue surrounding marriage in the country. The report also reveals that there are 10 million women above the age of 35 in this situation, along with 22 million young boys and girls who are also waiting for marriage.
As the pool of eligible marriage prospects continues to shrink, parents are becoming more open to seeking alliances outside their familial tribes. However, there is a growing reluctance to arrange marriages with individuals from different tribes due to the challenge of finding suitable matches beyond immediate social circles.
At the same time, female labor force participation (FLFP) in urban Pakistan has remained stagnant at around 10 percent for over two decades. This is one of the lowest rates globally. Educated women face difficulties in entering and sustaining employment, while women with lower levels of education face even greater limitations. The report highlights the gaps in aspirations and the lack of awareness about opportunities for women.
Many women drop out of school due to safety concerns or financial constraints, while others fear familial or communal resistance if they pursue jobs outside the home. Those who do work often face low wages and the added burden of household responsibilities.
It is crucial to address these issues and create a supportive environment for women in Pakistan. By promoting education, raising awareness about opportunities, and challenging societal norms and biases, Pakistani women can be empowered to pursue their goals and contribute to the workforce.
