Weekly Inflation in Pakistan Witnesses Decrease, According to PBS Data

December 22, 2023 – The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has reported a decrease of 0.51 percent in the weekly inflation, as measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), for the combined consumption groups during the week ending on December 21.

The SPI for the mentioned week was recorded at 310.00 points, compared to 311.58 points in the previous week, according to the PBS data. In comparison to the corresponding week of the previous year, the SPI for the combined consumption group saw an increase of 42.60 percent.

The weekly SPI, with the base year 2015-16 = 100, covers 17 urban centers and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.

The SPI for the lowest consumption group, with up to Rs 17,732, decreased by 0.39 percent to 304.83 points from the previous week’s 306.02 points.

For consumption groups from Rs 17,732-22,888, Rs 22,889-29,517, Rs 29,518-44,175, and above Rs 44,175, the SPI decreased by 0.40 percent, 0.39 percent, 0.44 percent, and 0.59 percent, respectively.

During the week, out of 51 items, the prices of 18 items (35.29 percent) increased, 09 items (17.65 percent) decreased, and 24 items (47.06 percent) remained stable.

The items that saw a decrease in their average prices on a week-on-week (WoW) basis included potatoes (13.17 percent), petrol super (4.97 percent), diesel (4.68 percent), tomatoes (3.45 percent), sugar (1.16 percent), wheat flour bag (0.33 percent), chicken (0.13 percent), rice basmati broken (0.11 percent), and cooking oil 5 liters (0.07 percent).

On the other hand, the items that saw an increase in their average prices on a WoW basis included eggs (10.42 percent), firewood whole (1.23 percent), onions (1.19 percent), pulse moong (0.88 percent), pulse gram (0.79 percent), garlic and rice irri-6/9 (0.40 percent each), pulse masoor (0.30 percent), LPG (0.26 percent), bananas (0.19 percent), shirting (0.15 percent), and georgette (0.13 percent).

Compared to the prices a year ago, items such as onions (23.92 percent), mustard oil (4.24 percent), vegetable ghee 1 kg (1.59 percent), vegetable ghee 2.5 kg (0.62 percent), and bananas (0.06 percent) witnessed a decrease in prices.

On the other hand, the commodities that recorded an increase in their average prices on a year-on-year (YoY) basis included gas charges for q1 (1108.59 percent), cigarettes (93.22 percent), chilies powder (81.74 percent), wheat flour (78.80 percent), garlic (72.48 percent), rice basmati broken (62.52 percent), rice irri-6/9 (59.45 percent), gents sponge chappal (58.05 percent), tomatoes (56.89 percent), gents sandal (53.37 percent), sugar (50.33 percent), and gur (49.86 percent).
