Fostering Agricultural Development: US Govt. Reaffirms Support for Pakistan’s Agriculture Sector

In a show of continued support for Pakistan’s agricultural development, the US government recently visited key agricultural institutions in Punjab. The Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Kate Somvongsiri, and the US Consul General in Lahore, Kristin Hawkins, highlighted the longstanding partnership between the US and Pakistan in the agriculture and dairy sectors.

During their one-day trip to Chakwal, the officials visited the Centre of Excellence for Olive Research and Training at the Barani Agriculture Research Institute and the Ghulam Rasul Farm. At the Ghulam Rasul Farm, Director Kate Somvongsiri toured the milk pasteurization facility established with USAID’s support. She emphasized the importance of integrating technology and value addition in dairy farming to enhance productivity and sustainability. The farm serves as a prime example of how the US-Pakistan partnership is improving dairy productivity and increasing farmers’ income through training and connections with micro-finance institutions and breeder associations.

The Ghulam Rasul Farm’s success story continues even after the conclusion of a USAID project in 2021. With the support of USAID, the farm has expanded its operations and introduced new products, showcasing the long-term impact of the organization’s work.

The visit to the Centre of Excellence for Olive Research and Training at the Barani Agriculture Research Institute explored the potential for olive production in Chakwal. US Consul General Kristin Hawkins and USAID Mission Director Somvongsiri praised the institute’s efforts to promote olive cultivation following USAID’s assistance in establishing the Centre of Excellence. The officials also expressed gratitude to Chakwal Deputy Commissioner Qurat-ul-Ain Malik for her hospitality and for making their first visit to Chakwal a success.

These visits highlight the US government’s commitment to supporting economic growth and sustainability in Pakistan’s agricultural sector. The United States remains dedicated to fostering partnerships that drive sustainable development and economic prosperity for the people of Pakistan.
