Ukraine Boosts Use of Domestic-Made Military Equipment Amid Faltering Western Aid

In an effort to enhance its self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on Western military aid, Ukraine has significantly increased the use of domestic-made weapons and military equipment, according to a senior defence official. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called for the strengthening of Ukraine’s domestic defence industry to effectively combat Russia’s invasion and potential cuts in military aid from the United States. Deputy Defence Minister Ivan Havryliuk reported that during the first two months of 2024, Ukraine has already deployed 46 different types of domestically produced equipment to its armed forces, marking a substantial increase compared to the same period last year.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure that Ukraine becomes as self-sufficient as possible in providing the necessary weapons to its defence forces,” stated Havryliuk, emphasizing the country’s commitment to bolstering its military capabilities. He further urged foreign partners to increase investment and engage in joint production ventures with Ukrainian companies.

To promote this goal, Ukraine has forged numerous contracts for joint production and technology exchanges with Western allies. Rheinmetall, an esteemed German defence company renowned for its artillery and tank shells, recently announced its plans to establish an ammunition factory in Ukraine, further strengthening the country’s domestic defence industry.

However, Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov underscored the need for timely arms deliveries from Kyiv’s partners, as approximately 50% of the arms deliveries arrive late. This highlights the challenges Ukraine faces in developing a self-reliant military supply chain.

Ukraine’s determination to boost its domestic defence industry reflects its commitment to national security and the safeguarding of its sovereignty. By depending less on foreign aid, Ukraine aims to fortify its military capabilities and protect its borders more effectively.
