Export of agricultural commodities, including basmati rice, witnessed a decline in September this year. According to APEDA, the agri-export promotion body, the export volume dropped to 17.93 lakh tonnes, down from 27.94 lakh tonnes in the previous month. Despite April and May recording exports of around 33 lakh tonnes each, shipments of farm products fell to nearly 18 lakh tonnes due to various restrictions on the export of different rice varieties, such as broken rice and non-basmati white rice.

The data maintained by APEDA reveals that agricultural exports in August of the 2023-24 fiscal stood at 27.94 lakh tonnes. However, in September, there was a decline in the export value of farm items to Rs 14,153 crore compared to Rs 18,128 crore in August of the same fiscal. Notably, non-basmati exports accounted for a significant portion of the September exports at 4.25 lakh tonnes, followed by basmati rice at 1.21 lakh tonnes, fresh onions at 1.51 lakh tonnes, and buffalo meat at 1,21,427 tonnes.

From April to September, the total export of agri-commodities reached 172.27 lakh tonnes. This year, certain agricultural commodities were negatively impacted by restrictions on rice varieties, the introduction of a minimum export price on basmati rice to boost domestic supply, and the control of food inflation. APEDA monitors the export of 47 agricultural commodities, including meat and poultry products.
