A new weight loss trend has taken over social media, particularly TikTok, where many users claim to have shed pounds by drinking a homemade beverage called Rice-Zempic. It is being hailed as a cost-effective alternative to the popular weight loss drug Ozempic, which has seen a surge in demand among celebrities and the general public. However, Ozempic comes with a steep price tag of $935 per month and requires a doctor’s prescription.
To combat the high cost and prescription requirement, some people have turned to Rice-Zempic. This beverage is made by combining rice, water, and lime juice. The process involves steeping unwashed rice and lime juice in warm water for 5 to 30 minutes, or sometimes overnight. The rice is then strained out, leaving behind the drink to be consumed.
While fans of Rice-Zempic claim that it is a cheaper and more accessible option compared to Ozempic, experts caution against the weight loss miracles attributed to this homemade remedy. Scott Keatley, co-owner of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy, states that Rice-Zempic has “zero scientific backing.” Although rice water may offer some nutritional benefits due to its starch content, there is no evidence to suggest that it significantly impacts weight loss like Ozempic does.
Other doctors acknowledge that Rice-Zempic may promote feelings of satiety, ultimately leading to reduced food consumption. Mir Ali, MD, explains that the drink is low in calories and can make individuals feel fuller before a meal. Kunal Shah, an assistant professor in the endocrinology division at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, adds that the starch in the drink expands in the stomach but the effect is short-lived. It should be noted that Rice-Zempic does not mimic the hormonal effects of Ozempic, which stimulates receptors and aids in weight loss.
