A Rice Trader from Nagpur Allegedly Duped of ₹1.68 Crore by Extortionists

Nagpur: In a shocking incident, a rice trader from Nagpur has allegedly been duped of ₹1.68 crore by a group of extortionists. The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the city police has issued notices to four individuals in connection with the case. Chinnababu Reddy, Vipin Agrawal, BV Krishnarao, and the director of Laxmi Venkateshwara Hygiene Food, all from Kakinada, AP, have been booked for their involvement.

The incident dates back to April 2023, when the complainant, Anoop Goyal, who is the owner of Shriram Food Industries, purchased 30,000 tonnes of rice with the intention of exporting it to West Africa. The rice was being stored at a godown owned by a company in Kakinada. However, the manager of the company, Shri Kumar, along with Agrawal and Reddy, informed Goyal that the Rice Exporter Association had denied permission to load the rice onto a ship.

In an attempt to “settle” the matter, Reddy allegedly demanded ₹2.49 crore from Goyal. Eventually, Goyal agreed to pay ₹1.69 crore. Agrawal then instructed Goyal to deposit the money into a food company’s account instead of the association’s account. Once the consignment reached Senegal, Goyal approached the Lakadganj police to report the incident.

This unfortunate incident highlights the need for vigilance and caution while conducting business transactions. Rice traders and exporters must be wary of such fraudulent activities and ensure that they are dealing with reputable and trustworthy individuals and organizations. It is essential to verify the credentials and authenticity of all parties involved to protect one’s interests.
