Rice Research Station in Bahawalnagar Struggles to Make Breakthroughs

Rice Research Station in Bahawalnagar

The Bahawalnagar Rice Research Station, located in a prominent rice-producing region, has been unable to make any significant advancements despite its state-of-the-art facilities and resources.

The research station was established in 2012 with an investment of Rs148 million to develop extra-long grain rice varieties for South Punjab and provide high-quality rice seeds. Its ultimate goal was to promote modern production techniques, organize informative seminars, and offer training for the benefit of local farmers and the rice industry.

However, since its inception, the research station has not introduced a single new rice variety, failing to fulfill its primary objective of bringing innovation and modern technology to Pakistan’s rice industry.

Dr. Ijaz, a scientist at the research station, revealed that the institution is currently working on two national-level seed varieties, expected to be available in the market within the next 2 to 3 years.

Despite the lack of progress, the research team has collaborated with the Kalashah Kaku Research Centre to introduce six varieties since 2019. Unfortunately, inadequate staffing and substandard facilities, including a malfunctioning vehicle, have impeded their efforts to improve rice quality and production.

Local farmer Sajjad expressed the shared frustration of many farmers, stating that they have never received quality seeds or proper guidance. As a result, farmers are forced to purchase fertilizers, seeds, and chemicals at double the market rate, hoping to achieve a profitable return on their crops.

“Unfortunately, market rates do not cover production costs, leaving farmers financially burdened,” Sajjad remarked.

A local rice factory owner mentioned that Bahawalnagar is home to approximately 200 rice factories, and its parboiled rice is renowned internationally. The region contributes to 60% of the national total of parboiled rice production in Pakistan. However, the local administration has provided limited assistance, exacerbating the challenges faced by rice farmers and the industry.

It is disheartening to see the once-promising Rice Research Station in Bahawalnagar fall short of its potential to lead the way in rice innovation.
