Local white rice supply shortage issue improving, according to Mat Sabu
The Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) has successfully alleviated the white rice supply shortage in the country with their year-end rice harvest, according to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. While the local rice supply has improved, it has not yet stabilized fully due to high consumer demand.
Mohamad emphasized that there is still a shortage of local white rice, but the situation has improved. The local rice is in high demand because imported rice is expensive. Currently, the country’s rice self-sufficiency rate stands at 65%.
In addition to the harvest, Mada is also taking steps to ensure a stable rice supply for the coming year by replanting padi.
Mohamad encouraged city residents to contribute to food security initiatives by establishing community gardens in suitable open spaces. He highlighted that open spaces near residential areas can be utilized to grow cash crops like chilli and lemongrass, which would benefit the local community.
To support community development projects, including agriculture, the government has allocated RM1 billion through the Prime Minister’s Department. Mohamad advised those interested in urban farming activities to obtain approval from local authorities to avoid disruption to existing infrastructure.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an allocation of RM1 billion under the Madani Community Fund through Budget 2024. This fund aims to support efforts to boost the community economy, with each village, longhouse, and People’s Housing Project (PPR) receiving a maximum fund of RM100,000 for economic projects such as handicrafts or hydroponics.
Overall, the Mada’s year-end rice harvest has helped alleviate the local white rice supply shortage. Efforts to stabilize the supply are ongoing, and city residents are encouraged to participate in food security initiatives. The government is also actively supporting community development projects, including agriculture, to boost the community economy.
