NACCOL Urges Distribution of Local White Rice by Padi and Rice Regulatory Division
NACCOL Urges Swift Distribution of Local White Rice to Supermarkets Nationwide
KUALA TERENGGANU – In an effort to alleviate the shortage of rice in the market, the National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) has called on the Padi and Rice Regulatory Division to immediately distribute local white rice to supermarkets across the country.
Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, Chairman of the NACCOL Task Force (Food Cluster), made the plea following a survey conducted by a Civil Mobilisation Team. The survey revealed that only a few supermarkets currently have stock of local white rice.
“Our team of 70 people visits 70 locations every two days to monitor and ensure the availability of local white rice in supermarkets. The report from our team indicates that the supply is limited,” said Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal during a visit to a local supermarket.
The demand for local white rice, which is priced at RM26 for every 10 kilograms, is high among the public, particularly during the fasting month and leading up to Hari Raya.
In a recent NACCOL Meeting No. 1/2024, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, four measures were decided upon to address the rice shortage issue.
One of the actions taken was the government’s decision to process and release all current stocks of padi and rice, totaling 140,000 tonnes, that have been purchased by manufacturers for immediate use in the local market.
