“Pakistani Scientists Triumph in Developing New Strain of Long-Grain Rice”
Pakistan’s agricultural scientists have achieved a significant milestone by successfully developing a revolutionary new variety of rice called “Golden Super Basmati.” This variety stands out for having the longest grains ever recorded, measuring an impressive 9.5 millimeters in length. This breakthrough was made possible through the collaborative efforts of scientists at the Rice Research Institute (RRI) in Kala Shah Kaku. They surpassed the previous length record set by their own PK 2021 rice variety, which had grains measuring 8.26 millimeters.
Dr. Makhdoom Sabir, the Chief Scientist at RRI, explained that the institute has proposed the widespread cultivation of two rice varieties: Golden Super Basmati and another high-yielding variety called White Super Basmati. The Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) will oversee the cultivation of these varieties. Golden Super Basmati, now recognized as the longest-grain basmati rice variety ever produced, boasts a length of 9.5 millimeters. On the other hand, White Super Basmati, also developed by the institute, is rich in iron and zinc, making it the country’s first fortified rice variety.
In addition to these achievements, RRI Kala Shah Kaku has introduced a ground-breaking hybrid rice variety called KSK 2023. This variety promises a high yield of 110 maunds per acre and can be harvested in just 109 days, thus streamlining the rice cultivation process in Pakistan.
The successful development of these new rice varieties has significant implications for Pakistan’s agricultural sector, especially considering the rising prices of essential commodities such as wheat, sugar, pulses, rice, tomatoes, and potatoes.
