Advisory by NDMA Identifies High-Risk Areas amid Worsening Air Quality from Increasing Smog

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a new advisory to raise awareness about the escalating risks of poor air quality caused by the increasing trend of smog in the plains of Punjab and the Pothohar region. This advisory is essential for the general public to take necessary precautions and stay safe in the face of this environmental challenge.
According to the NDMA, the existing weather conditions in the plains of Punjab, combined with emissions from vehicles and industries, residue burning of rice crops, and an upcoming westerly system, are expected to deteriorate the air quality in Punjab and Pothohar.
The advisory further highlights that the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings during the upcoming week are predicted to be poor in central and south Punjab, with hazardous levels of smog in cities like Gujranwala, Multan, Lahore, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, and their surrounding areas such as Sargodha, DG Khan, and Sahiwal divisions. Additionally, moderate to poor AQI is also expected in the Rawalpindi division, including Islamabad.
To combat the effects of smog, the NDMA emphasizes the importance of taking precautionary measures. It recommends limiting outdoor activities and spending more time indoors on smoggy days. It is also recommended that individuals wear masks when they go outside to reduce the inhalation of smog particles.
The NDMA advises the public to stay informed about the local air quality levels and follow the recommendations provided by the authorities. It is essential to drink plenty of water to keep the respiratory system hydrated.
