Weekly Inflation Increases Following Six Consecutive Weeks of Decline
The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has announced that the Sensitive Price Index-based inflation for the week ending May 30, 2024, has increased by 0.11 percent. This marks a change in direction after six consecutive weeks of declining short-term inflation. Out of the 51 items included in the index, the prices of 14 items (27.45 percent) increased, 14 items (27.45 percent) decreased, and 23 items (45.10 percent) remained stable.
During this period, the prices of several items experienced an increase. Tomatoes saw a rise of 11.25 percent, onions increased by 3.62 percent, pulse mash went up by 2 percent, bananas saw a 1.78 percent increase, potatoes rose by 1.23 percent, curd increased by 1.17 percent, pulse gram rose by 1.04 percent, milk fresh saw an increase of 0.56 percent, cigarettes capstan 20’s packet each increased by 0.52 percent, beef with bone went up by 0.06 percent, and gur increased by 0.03 percent.
However, the prices of certain items decreased during the same period. Eggs saw a decline of 6.14 percent, LPG decreased by 5.40 percent, garlic went down by 4.02 percent, rice irri-6/9 experienced a decrease of 2.93 percent, wheat flour bag 20 kg decreased by 1.89 percent, rice basmati broken saw a decline of 1.49 percent, pulse moong went down by 0.51 percent, firewood whole 40 kg saw a decrease of 0.51 percent, mustard oil decreased by 0.20 percent, bread plain saw a decline of 0.18 percent, sugar went down by 0.12 percent, chicken decreased by 0.11 percent, and pulse masoor experienced a decline of 0.09 percent.
Looking at the year-on-year trend, there is an overall increase of 21.40 percent in inflation. This can be attributed to the increase in the prices of gas charges for Q1 (570 percent), onions (81.78 percent), chilies powder (59.98 percent), tomatoes (52.54 percent), garlic (47.83 percent), salt powder (31.30 percent), pulse mash (23.93 percent), beef (22.55 percent), and sugar (19.89 percent). On the other hand, there was a decrease in the prices of bananas (34.58 percent), wheat flour (29.26 percent), chicken (25.40 percent), cooking oil 5 litre (17.72 percent), vegetable ghee 2.5 kg (15.12 percent), vegetable ghee 1 kg (14.47 percent), LPG (11.79 percent), mustard oil (11.27 percent), and eggs (11.01 percent).
