Nepal Earthquake: Patanjali Ayurveda Granted Special Exemption to Export Rice for Earthquake Victims
In a special exemption granted by the Central government, Patanjali Ayurveda has been allowed to export 20 tonnes of non-basmati white rice as a donation to Nepal for the victims of the recent earthquake. Despite the ban on the export of non-basmati white rice imposed on July 20 to prioritize domestic supply, exceptions are made for specific countries based on government permission to address their food security requirements.
The directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) has stated in a notification that Patanjali Ayurveda has been granted a one-time exemption from the export ban to send 20 tonnes of non-basmati white rice (semi-milled or wholly milled rice, whether or not polished or glazed) as a donation to Nepal for earthquake victims.
According to a DGFT notification in October, the government has permitted the export of 10,34,800 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to seven countries, including Nepal, Cameroon, and Malaysia. The quantity allocated for Nepal is 95,000 tonnes, showing the importance of the Nepalese market.
Nepal recently experienced a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on November 6, resulting in the death of 153 people and injuring over 250 individuals. The earthquake primarily affected the Jajarkot and Rukum West districts in western Nepal, causing damage to around 8,000 public and private properties. India has taken the initiative to provide emergency relief materials to the affected districts in Nepal, becoming the first country to do so.
