Pakistan’s Tea Imports Increase by 5.53% to $336.4m in Six-Month Period
Pakistan’s tea imports have experienced a 5.53% growth in the first half of the current fiscal year, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). Between July and December 2023, the country imported tea worth $336.423 million, compared to $318.798 million during the same period last year. The quantity of tea imported also increased by 9.12%, with 139,751 metric tonnes imported during the review period, as opposed to 128,068 metric tonnes in the previous year.
The year-on-year comparison revealed a drop of 16.80% in tea imports during December 2023, with the value decreasing to $58.869 million from $70.759 million in December 2022. However, when compared to November 2023, there was a 9.81% surge in imports.
In addition to tea, Pakistan’s overall food group imports during July-December 2023-24 decreased by 19.48% to $3,957.188 billion compared to $4,914.278 billion in the previous year.
On a positive note, Pakistan’s overall merchandise trade deficit decreased by 34.29% during the first half of the current fiscal year. The trade deficit from July to December 2023-24 amounted to $11.148 billion, a significant decrease from the $16.965 billion deficit recorded during the same period in the previous year.
Moreover, exports saw an increase of 5.17% during the review period, reaching $14.981 billion, while imports dropped by 16.28% to $26.129 billion.
