Pakistan Emerges as Leading Sesame Seed Exporter to China
Pakistan has seen a significant increase in its sesame seed exports to China, with a surge of 117.85 percent recorded last year. The country has shipped sesame seeds worth $250 million to China from January to November 2023, establishing itself as a major player in the global sesame seed market. Chinese consumers have shown a growing preference for the quality and flavor of Pakistani sesame, according to a senior official at the Pakistan Embassy in Beijing.
In comparison to the same period last year, Pakistan’s export of sesame seeds to China rose from $117.85 million to $250.85 million, marking a remarkable increase of over 112 percent. Furthermore, Pakistan’s total export of sesame seeds to China in 2022 was $128.44 million, while it was $120.44 million in 2021.
The quantity of sesame seeds exported from Pakistan to China also witnessed significant growth. From January to November 2023, Pakistan exported 143,527.875 tons of sesame seeds to China, compared to 84,985.321 tons in 2022. In 2021, China imported 92,516.55 tons of sesame seeds from Pakistan, solidifying its position as one of the key importers.
The success of Pakistan’s sesame seed industry can be attributed to several factors. Favorable climatic conditions, strategic agricultural policies, and effective market positioning have played a crucial role. Experts predict that this upward trend will continue, further strengthening Pakistan’s position as a top exporter of sesame seeds.
