Sesame Crop Experiences a Whopping 187% Surge in Cultivation
Sesame Seed Cultivation in Pakistan Witnesses Unprecedented Growth
The efforts of the Federal and provincial governments in Pakistan have led to a remarkable increase in sesame seed cultivation during the current season. Compared to the previous year, sesame seeds have been cultivated in 187% more land, with over 399,493 hectares dedicated to sesame cultivation. This information was shared in a press release by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research.
The collaboration between the agricultural departments of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan has played a crucial role in achieving these impressive results. These efforts have resulted in a significant expansion of sesame cultivation, with the cultivation area increasing from 18,000 to 135,600 hectares between 1948 and 2019. The production of sesame has also seen a substantial increase, rising from 6,000 to 69,600 tons during the same period.
Punjab, the leading province in terms of sesame production, contributes 95% of the total production, followed by Sindh with 2.1% and Balochistan with 2.2%. The average yield of sesame has also experienced a significant increase of 69%, rising from 442 to 750 kg/ha under the National Oilseeds Enhancement Program (NOEP).
Furthermore, Pakistan’s sesame exports have seen exponential growth in recent years. In 2020, exports stood at a modest $89.320 million, but by 2023, they had surged to an impressive $407 million. This growth has propelled Pakistan to the fifth position among major sesame exporting nations, with China absorbing over 80% of the exported sesame.
