Pakistani Grain Exporters See Growth in Chinese Market

Pakistani sesame and rice exporters have experienced significant growth in the Chinese market, according to the 2023 China Import Food Report. In 2022, Pakistani grain and product exports to China reached a value of $456 million, representing a 14.12% year-on-year growth. Muhammad Omair, a prominent Pakistani sesame and rice dealer, expressed his excitement about China’s vibrant consumption market during his visit to the country. Omair’s company alone has exported over 150 containers of sesame to China this year, and he plans to further expand his business by setting up an exhibition stand at the China International Import Expo (CIIE).

One of the key factors driving the growth of Pakistani grain exports to China is the bilateral free trade agreement, which enables competitive prices and high-quality products. Additionally, sesame, with its high oil content, has become increasingly popular among oil extraction companies in China. In the first three quarters of this year, Pakistan’s sesame exports to China reached a value of $56,446,268, reflecting a remarkable 41% growth compared to the same period in 2022, according to China’s General Administration of Customs.

Broken rice, primarily used for animal feed, has also seen a surge in demand in China. Despite the impact of floods, Muhammad Omair revealed that his company managed to export between 70 and 200 containers of broken rice to China every month. China’s General Administration of Customs reported a 20% increase in the import of broken rice from Pakistan.

The CIIE, which is now being organized offline without the constraints of the pandemic, provides valuable matchmaking opportunities for Pakistani and other international businesses to tap into the vast Chinese market. Omair emphasized the advantages of cheap freight and the CIIE’s platform, which enables businesses to showcase their products and connect with potential Chinese buyers.

Overall, Pakistani grain exporters have experienced impressive growth in the Chinese market, fueled by competitive prices, high-quality products, and the presence of the CIIE. With the bilateral free trade agreement and the increasing demand for sesame and broken rice, Pakistan is well-positioned to continue its success as a major player in the Chinese grain import market.
