President Dr Arif Alvi expressed his confidence in the current caretaker government and the military leadership in leading Pakistan towards economic progress, according to a report by The News. He highlighted the important role that decision-making plays in positioning the country on the path to economic stability. President Alvi made these remarks during the 15th Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan’s (REAP) recognition ceremony, where Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori was also present.
During his address at the ceremony, President Alvi expressed hope for the business community to contribute to Pakistan’s economic strengthening. He emphasized that Pakistan has tremendous potential that can be realized through taking responsibility. President Alvi congratulated REAP on its impressive journey from $300 million in exports to $3 billion. He encouraged REAP members to explore joint ventures and focus on value-added rice products. He also praised the concept of the “Biryani Festival” as a value addition and invited REAP to organize the festival in the President’s House.
The president called for the revival of rice research institutions to further capture the international market. He suggested that market-oriented institutions should be established in collaboration with the government and REAP. President Alvi also emphasized the importance of women’s participation in the workforce and their empowerment in economic affairs.
Governor Tessori applauded the rice crop as the second-best export of the country and expressed his disappointment that it has not been recognized as an industry yet. He stated that the Chief of the Army Staff, General Asim Munir, is actively combating economic terrorism along with border terrorism, which has contributed to stabilizing the value of the dollar.
REAP Chairman Chela Ram Kewlani emphasized that REAP is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy and highlighted the reputation of Pakistani rice at the international level. He mentioned that Pakistan’s rice crop amounts to 9 million tonnes and is exported to various regions including Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and beyond. The chairman requested that rice be declared as an industry and highlighted the challenges posed by the Minimum Export Price (MEP) of rice, which hinders exports. He also called for the establishment of a rice research institution to support growth and provide better opportunities for the industry.
Overall, the ceremony celebrated the success of Pakistan’s rice exporters and highlighted the potential for further growth and development in the rice industry. Through joint ventures, enhanced value addition, and research institutions, Pakistan aims to strengthen its position as a major player in the global rice market.
