pakistan frees 80 indian fishermen on november 9, confirms mumbai-based activist
Pakistan to Release 80 Indian Fishermen for Diwali Celebrations
In a positive development for India-Pakistan relations, Pakistan has decided to release and repatriate 80 Indian fishermen in time for Diwali, according to Jatin Desai, former general secretary of the India-Pakistan People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy. The fishermen, who have been held in Landi jail in Karachi, will be released on November 9 and repatriated to India via the Wagah border on November 10. With proper travel arrangements, they will be able to reach their homes in Gujarat just in time for Diwali celebrations on November 12.
This decision comes shortly after former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s return to Pakistan after four years in exile. During his time as prime minister, he had released 151 Indian fishermen from Pakistani jails as a goodwill gesture before his visit to India. Pakistan has previously released and repatriated 398 Indian fishermen in May and June this year. However, a batch of 100 fishermen scheduled for release in July has not been released yet for reasons unknown.
Jatin Desai emphasized that there are still more than 260 Indian fishermen, mostly from Gujarat, in Pakistani custody, while more than 60 Pakistani fishermen are held in Indian jails for allegedly violating Indian territorial waters. The release of these 80 fishermen is a positive step towards improving bilateral relations and resolving the issue of detained fishermen.
It is important to note the significance of the repatriation of Bhupatbhai Vala, a Gujarati fisherman who recently died in a Karachi jail. Pakistan handed over his mortal remains to Indian authorities at the Wagah border. Vala was apprehended by Pakistan on October 12 for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line. His death has further highlighted the urgency and importance of these repatriations.
In conclusion, the release and repatriation of 80 Indian fishermen by Pakistan is a welcome gesture that will allow these individuals to celebrate Diwali with their families. It is hoped that this positive step will contribute to the overall improvement of India-Pakistan relations and pave the way for further cooperation in resolving the issue of detained fishermen.
