The economic and trade relations between Pakistan and Iran have been highlighted by the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Pakistan, Dr. Reza Amiri Moghaddam. Despite the extensive commonalities in terms of history, religion, and culture, the trade between the two countries was only 2 billion 40 million dollars last year. However, there is potential for growth, particularly in un-official trade between the two nations.

During his visit to Lahore at the invitation of Chairman Institute of International Relations and Media Research Mohammad Mehdi, Dr. Moghaddam expressed that Iran considers relations with neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan, as a top priority. The opening of three markets on the border and the potential for three more highlight the shared interest in developing strategic relations. Iran can provide cheap energy for projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and the common border reduces transportation costs.

The leadership of both countries has recognized the economic and commercial benefits that can be derived from utilizing the long border shared between Pakistan and Iran. Turning neighboring borders into trade borders can contribute to lasting peace. Dr. Moghaddam emphasized the role of the media in promoting and highlighting the commonalities between the two nations. Various methods can be explored to promote trade, such as using a national currency, barter trade, and currencies other than the dollar.

Currently, Pakistan and Russia are already working with the Chinese currency, Yuan, to facilitate trade. Expanding on this, there is potential to increase trade tenfold. Pakistan can export animals, meat, pulses, and rice to Iran, while Iran can export fuel, building materials, food products, and knowledge-based goods to Pakistan. It is important to identify and address the enemies of both countries who hinder peace. Dr. Moghaddam expressed respect for Pakistan’s decisions in this regard.

Addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Iranian ambassador voiced Iran’s open support for the Palestinians and denounced the relations some Arab countries have with Israel. Israel’s ambitions extend beyond occupying Palestine as they seek to expand their influence to include Pakistan, Iran, India, and the Arab countries. The cooperation of western countries in supporting Israeli atrocities against Palestinians has raised concerns globally. The Iranians are proud of their support for the Palestinians, and they believe that Israel’s brutality will eventually be brought to an end.

In terms of Iran-Saudi Arabia relations, Dr. Moghaddam emphasized Iran’s commitment to promoting bilateral relations for the benefit of the Islamic world and the region. He also mentioned that the power dynamics have shifted, and the United States no longer holds the same influence as before, allowing for smoother relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

In conclusion, Iran and Pakistan share a long border and have many commonalities, making them natural economic and trade partners. Expanding trade between the two nations can bring economic benefits and contribute to lasting peace. It is important for both countries to address their enemies and work together to overcome obstacles. The support of Iran for the Palestinians and its commitment to promoting peace in the region were also highlighted.
