KARACHI, NOV 24 /DNA/ – In an effort to enhance trade between Pakistan and Iran, President FPCCI Irfan Iqbal Sheikh has welcomed a proposal by Reza Amiri Moghadam, the Iranian Ambassador in Pakistan, to establish border markets. This initiative aims to address Pakistan’s trade deficit issues by taking advantage of the proximity between the two countries, resulting in reduced shipping and logistics costs.

President Irfan Iqbal Sheikh emphasized that the lack of banking channels between Pakistan and Iran is the main obstacle to increasing Pakistani exports to Iran. He suggested that an effective currency swap mechanism could potentially resolve this issue.

Vice President FPCCI Shaukat Omerson highlighted the numerous products and services that Pakistan can export to Iran in large quantities. These include rice, fruits, vegetables, value-added textiles, sports goods, surgical instruments, pharmaceuticals, and IT services. Mr. Omerson urged the need to capitalize on the land-based transportation opportunities that have emerged from Pakistan’s inclusion in the TIR convention. Additionally, he mentioned the potential for utilizing land-based routes for transit trade to Central Asian countries and beyond.

Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam proposed that Iran, being one of the world’s leading producers of petrochemical and energy sources, can play a vital role in bridging Pakistan’s energy deficiencies through reliable and affordable supplies. He also acknowledged the popularity of Pakistani rice and textiles in Iran, along with the existing cultural and religious ties between the two countries. The Ambassador expressed his willingness to strengthen people-to-people, business-to-business, and chamber-to-chamber contacts, as well as facilitate Pakistani business tourism, visas, and participation in trade exhibitions and fairs held in Iran.

Overall, this initiative holds significant potential for boosting trade between Pakistan and Iran, fostering economic growth, and strengthening bilateral relations.
