Gunmen Shoot and Kill Acquitted Suspect in Death of Indian Spy in Pakistan

Pakistani authorities are currently investigating the shooting death of Amir Tamba, a man who had been acquitted in the case of the killing of accused Indian spy Sarabjit Singh in a Lahore prison in 2013. Tamba’s death occurred on Sunday in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore.

Sarabjit Singh was an Indian national who was convicted of spying in Pakistan and was handed a death sentence in 1991. However, in 2013, he was attacked by inmates in a Lahore prison and died as a result. This incident heightened tensions between Pakistan and India, two nuclear-armed rivals.

Tamba, along with another man, stood trial for Singh’s death but were acquitted in 2018 due to a lack of evidence. Gunmen entered Tamba’s house on Sunday and shot him before fleeing the scene on a motorbike. Pakistan’s army and intelligence agencies responded by removing Tamba’s body and taking it to the city’s Combined Military Hospital.

The deputy inspector general of police in Lahore, Ali Nasir Rizvi, confirmed that a case has been filed against unidentified assailants but did not provide further details or a possible motive for the attack.

While there was limited coverage of Tamba’s death in the Pakistani media, Indian outlets quickly reported on the shooting. As of now, there has been no official comment from Indian authorities.

Sarabjit Singh was initially arrested in 1990 for his involvement in a series of bombings in Lahore and Faisalabad, which resulted in the deaths of 14 people. Despite his family’s claims of his innocence, Singh was convicted.

Notably, both the United States and Canada have accused Indian agents of being linked to assassination plots on their soil. India has dismissed the allegations, calling them “absurd.”
