Weekly Inflation in Pakistan Approaches 30%
The latest data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reveals that the Sensitive Price Index (SPI)-based inflation for the week ending on November 9, 2023, increased by 0.73 percent. This rise can be attributed to the increase in food prices.
Furthermore, the year-on-year trend indicates a significant increase of 29.86 percent. This surge is primarily driven by the rise in the prices of various commodities. Gas charges for Q1 experienced a staggering increase of 108.38 percent, while the prices of cigarettes witnessed a rise of 94.46 percent. Other items that contributed to the overall increase include chilies powder (84.11 percent), wheat flour (81.23 percent), rice basmati broken (77.93 percent), rice irri-6/9 (60.65 percent), garlic (58.23 percent), and sugar (57.57 percent).
However, there were certain items that experienced a decrease in prices. Onions saw a decrease of 32.27 percent, followed by tomatoes at 9.08 percent. Mustard oil experienced a decrease of 3.88 percent, while pulse gram and vegetable ghee 1 kg observed decreases of 2.80 percent and 1.69 percent, respectively.
Out of the 51 items analyzed, 20 saw an increase in prices, accounting for 39.22 percent. Eight items witnessed a decrease, making up 15.69 percent, while the prices of 23 items remained stable, accounting for 45.09 percent.
Among the items with increased prices during the review period were tomatoes (15.43 percent), potatoes (4.47 percent), wheat flour bags weighing 20 kg (2.36 percent), garlic (2.16 percent), salt powdered (1.82 percent), and chicken (1.60 percent).
On the other hand, items that experienced a decrease in prices during the review period include gur (2.43 percent), rice irri-6/9 (0.34 percent), rice basmati broken (0.13 percent), pulse mash (0.12 percent), and pulse moong (0.05 percent).
These changes in prices have significant implications for consumers and businesses alike. It is important for individuals and organizations to carefully assess these fluctuations to effectively manage their budgets and make informed decisions.
