Annual Inflation in Pakistan Soars 29.65% Due to Surging Gas Prices

Weekly Inflation in Pakistan Sees Decline

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has reported a decline in weekly inflation, as measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI). According to the report released on Friday, the inflation rate decreased by 0.33 percent during the week ending on October 19.

The Combined Index, as reported by PBS, stood at 277.11, down from 278.04 on October 19, 2023. This is a significant contrast to the index of 213.74 recorded on October 27, 2022, representing a year-on-year decrease.

In terms of price changes for various items, the analysis shows that 14 items experienced an increase in average prices, 17 items saw a decrease, and 20 items remained stable.

There were notable reductions in the prices of various items including chicken (10.19 percent), onions (4.4 percent), rice IRRI-6/9 (3.84 percent), bananas (3.64 percent), gur (3.4 percent), pulse masoor (2.36 percent), sugar (2.22 percent), and mustard oil (2.17 percent).

On the other hand, there were notable price increases for tomatoes (20.81 percent), potatoes (3.33 percent), eggs (1.63 percent), salt powdered (0.91 percent), garlic (0.77 percent), tea prepared (0.67 percent), bread plain (0.56 percent), and mutton (0.28 percent).

In a year-on-year comparison, overall inflation has increased by 29.65 percent. This trend reflects significant hikes in gas charges for Q1 (108.38 percent), cigarettes (94.46 percent), chilies powder (84.11 percent), rice basmati broken (78.51 percent), wheat flour (77.49 percent), sugar (63.22 percent), rice irri-6/9 (62.83 percent), gents sponge chappal (58.05 percent), gur (57.73 percent), and salt powdered (54.84 percent).

In contrast, there have been price decreases in tomatoes (31.90 percent), onions (24.88 percent), pulse gramme (5.82 percent), mustard oil (4.16 percent), and vegetable ghee (1 1 kg) (0.92 percent).
