Food Exports Surge by 18.88% and Imports Plummet by 32% in FY 2023-24’s First Quarter

ISLAMABAD – The total value of food group exports from Pakistan in the first quarter of the financial year 2023-24 increased by 18.88 percent compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. From July to September 2023, food commodities worth $1.280 billion were exported, compared to $1.077 billion in the previous year.

Rice exports, a significant contributor to the country’s food group exports, grew by 0.98 percent during this period. A total of 595,557 metric tons of rice valued at $406.387 million were exported. In addition, fish and fish preparations saw an increase of 3.75 percent, with 37,803 metric tons worth $83.064 million being exported.

The export of fruits also witnessed a notable growth. Approximately 155,776 metric tons of fruits were exported, earning the country $88.668 million. This shows a significant increase compared to the 105,950 metric tons of fruits valued at $78.867 million that were exported in the same period last year.

Another notable increase was seen in the export of leguminous vegetables, also known as pulses. Over 96 metric tons of leguminous vegetables valued at $84,000 were exported, marking an increase of 80.08 percent from the previous year.

Other food commodities that experienced growth in exports include spices, with an increase of 23.51 percent and a value of $23.759 million. Oil seeds and nuts also surged by 405.85 percent, valued at $185.991 million. Additionally, sugar exports doubled, with 33,1012 metric tons worth $21.070 million being exported during the first quarter of the current financial year.

However, food group imports into the country decreased by 32.00 percent during this period. A total of food commodities worth $1.85 billion were imported, compared to $2.723 billion in the same period of the previous year.
