Building a Better Future: Empowering Women through Poultry Farming

“I’m planning to grow more turkeys for my flock, to add even more income for my family,” says Piran, one of 1,250 women who received poultry from the FAO Recovery of Agriculture Based Livelihoods of Vulnerable Farmers Affected by 2012 Floods.

Fifty-year-old Piran Hatoon resides in Majno Khan Bahalakani Village in Kashmore District of Sindh, Pakistan. She has nine children, ranging from the youngest at five years old to the oldest at 23. Piran’s husband, Majinoo Khan, earns a living by growing rice and wheat on a rented 3-acre piece of land, but the income is always insufficient.

Life became even more challenging when their village was struck by floods in the summer of 2012. The standing water destroyed most of their rice crop, leaving them unable to cover the loan they had taken to purchase the seeds earlier in the year. Piran and her husband were barely managing to provide one meal a day for their large family, unsure of how to escape their dire situation.

Fortunately, when the DFID-funded FAO floods relief project reached Piran’s village, her family was identified as one of the most in need of support. To address the food shortage they were facing, the project provided Piran with two turkeys – a hen and a cockerel – and taught her how to care for the birds. Additionally, the project team helped establish a system where a neighbor would collect the eggs and sell them in a nearby town.

In traditional rural Sindh, women like Piran are not typically allowed to leave their family compound, making these arrangements crucial for her to sell the eggs.

Currently, the hen lays 7-8 eggs a month. With assistance from her neighbors, Piran sells these eggs to shopkeepers in the nearby town for 70 Rupees (US$0.7) per egg, earning approximately 500 Rupees (US$5) per month. Piran utilizes this income to purchase essential items and medication for her family.

“The FAO project team has also taught me how to hatch the eggs, and in the near future, I am planning to expand my flock by growing more turkeys,” says Piran. She is among 1,250 women who received chickens or turkeys from the project, providing them with an additional source of nutrition and income. “By doing this, I will be able to significantly enhance my family’s income,” she adds.

Empowering Women in Agriculture

Piran’s inspiring story is just one example of how the FAO’s initiative is empowering women in agriculture. By providing women with essential resources and knowledge, they can contribute to their family’s well-being while also gaining financial independence.
