President Dr Arif Alvi emphasized the importance of foreign investment and joint ventures in improving Pakistan’s economy during a recent ceremony. Speaking at the 15th Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) recognition ceremony, he commended the business community for its role in strengthening the country’s economy.

President Alvi highlighted the potential of Pakistan and urged REAP members to explore joint-ventures and focus on value-added rice items. He also suggested organizing a ‘Biryani Festival’ and invited REAP to hold the festival at the President House. Additionally, he stressed the need to revive rice research institutions to enhance Pakistan’s position in the international market.

The president emphasized the establishment of market-oriented institutions through collaboration between the government and REAP. He also emphasized the importance of women’s participation in the workforce to empower them and contribute to the country’s economy. Furthermore, he stressed the significance of education in preparing children to face the challenges confronting the nation.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori praised rice as the second-best export of Pakistan and expressed dismay over the lack of recognition it has received as an industry. He credited the Chief of Army Staff for his efforts in combating economic terrorism and stabilizing the value of the national currency. Governor Tessori also called for global support for the Palestinians and condemned the actions of Israel in Gaza.

REAP Chairman Chela Ram Kewlani emphasized the association’s role in the country’s economy and highlighted the international reputation of Pakistani rice. He mentioned that Pakistan exports rice to Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and other parts of the world. Kewlani urged President Alvi to declare rice as an official industry and address the issue of Minimum Export Price (MEP) that hinders rice exports. He also advocated for the establishment of a rice research institution to further enhance opportunities and growth in the industry.

During the ceremony, President Alvi and Sindh Governor Tessori presented awards and trophies to the top rice exporters.
