Caretaker Government and COAS Actively Pursuing Foreign Investment, Says President

President Dr Arif Alvi emphasized the efforts of the caretaker government and Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir to attract foreign investment through joint ventures for the betterment of the economy. He highlighted the significance of decision-making in achieving economic stability during his address at the 15th Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP)’s recognition ceremony. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori also attended the event, where President Alvi commended the business community for their potential in strengthening Pakistan’s economy.

President Alvi acknowledged the abundant potential of Pakistan and encouraged the members of REAP to take responsibility and explore joint ventures while focusing on value-added rice items. He appreciated the idea of a ‘Biryani Festival’ as a valuable addition to the rice industry and extended an invitation for REAP to organize the festival in the President House.

Furthermore, President Alvi stressed the need to revive rice research institutions to effectively compete in the international market. He proposed the establishment of market-oriented institutions in collaboration with the government and REAP.

President Alvi also highlighted the importance of women’s participation in the economy and called for their empowerment through employment. He emphasized the significance of educating children to prepare them for the country’s challenges. Additionally, he condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Governor Tessori acknowledged rice as the second-best export of Pakistan and expressed disappointment that it had not yet been recognized as an industry. He commended the efforts of the COAS in combating economic terrorism and reducing the value of the dollar. He also mentioned the ongoing action against illegal immigrants and its positive impact on the law and order situation in the country. Regarding the Palestinian issue, he urged the world to raise its voice against Israeli brutalities and show support for the Palestinians.

REAP Chairman Chela Ram Kewlani highlighted the essential role of the organization in Pakistan’s economy. He emphasized that Pakistani rice had become a renowned international brand, with exports reaching $3 billion from $300 million in the past. Kewlani requested President Alvi to declare rice as an industry and address the issue of the Minimum Export Price (MEP) affecting rice exports. He also called for the establishment of a rice research institution to enhance opportunities and exports growth.

The ceremony concluded with the distribution of awards and trophies by President Alvi and Governor Tessori to recognize the achievements of outstanding rice exporters.
