Pakistan’s Military Reveals Afghan Origins of March Attack Causing Death of Chinese Engineers
Pakistan’s military has revealed that a suicide bombing in March, which killed five Chinese engineers and a Pakistani driver, was planned in Afghanistan and carried out by an Afghan citizen. The attack took place in the Bisham district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The military stated that the attack aimed to damage the friendship between Pakistan and China, as the engineers were working on the Dasu Dam, a project related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Four individuals linked to the attack have been arrested. Pakistani Taliban militants, who have safe havens in Afghanistan, have also been implicated in a wave of attacks that have killed 62 security personnel in Pakistan this year. The U.S. consulate has warned of a potential terrorist attack at Karachi Port and advised its citizens to stay away from the area and remain vigilant in places commonly visited by tourists. The Pakistani military has emphasized its commitment to preventing attacks by undocumented foreigners and stated that 98% of a border fence with Afghanistan has been completed. Furthermore, 91% of a fence along the Iranian border has been constructed to combat illegal migration and cross-border militant activities. It was also announced that 563,639 Afghan migrants living illegally in Pakistan have returned to Afghanistan. The military denied rumors of any negotiations or deals with imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan or his political party. [AP]
