Businesses Urge Enhanced Cooperation with China in Agriculture Sector
Pakistan’s agricultural and food exports have the potential to strengthen through collaboration with China, according to Rafique Suleman, Convener FPCCI Rice Export Committee. Suleman suggests focusing on niche products, climate-resilient crops, technology transfer, and agritourism to deepen ties and ensure long-term food security.
In an interview with Gwadar Pro, Suleman highlights the existing strong cooperation between China and Pakistan in agriculture and food. This collaboration has resulted in technology transfer, joint ventures, market access, and knowledge sharing, which have enhanced Pakistan’s agricultural capacity and expanded its exports.
Official data shows that Pakistan’s total agriculture and food exports reached $3.847 billion during July-December 2023, an increase of $1.502 billion compared to the same period last year. This growth in agri-food exports has contributed to reducing the trade deficit by 34.3% to $11.14 billion in the first half.
Rice exports have seen significant growth, reaching $1.64 billion in the first half of FY24, a 96% increase compared to the same period last year. It is projected that rice exports may exceed $3 billion during the current fiscal year.
Suleman praises the outstanding performance of rice exports, attributing it to the strong demand for long grain basmati and non-basmati rice from Pakistan. He also notes that Pakistan offers cost-effective prices compared to other competitors in the market.
To maximize its export potential and solidify its position as a major rice exporter, Pakistan should prioritize soil health and resource management, invest in quality, technology, and marketing, and stay ahead of the competition.
Overall, strengthening collaboration with China and focusing on key areas of growth can lead to sustained export growth in the agriculture and food sector for Pakistan.
