PhD Seminar Held on Integrated Effects of Plant Nutrition on Weed Control in Rice Production

Vice Chancellor of Sindh Agriculture University, Dr. Fateh Marri, has highlighted the importance of rice as a staple food in the global agricultural landscape. Speaking at a PhD Seminar titled “Integrated effects of Plant Nutrition of weed control for the quality production of Rice in Sindh province,” Dr. Marri emphasized the significant contribution of Pakistan to the world rice trade.
According to Dr. Marri, Pakistan contributes approximately 10% to the world’s rice trade, with an annual value of nearly $30 billion as of 2023. He also mentioned that while Pakistan currently imports hybrid rice seeds from different countries, including China, ongoing research on hybrid rice seeds within the country shows promise.
Dr. Marri emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between private and governmental institutions in the development of new hybrid rice varieties. He stated that over ten hybrid rice varieties have been developed, showcasing the potential for enhanced productivity in rice cultivation.
During the seminar, Dr. Reema Vistro, a dedicated PhD scholar from the Department of Agronomy, discussed the challenges hindering optimal rice production. She highlighted the detrimental impact of weeds and other plants during the crop season, which disrupt sunlight exposure and nutrient absorption, ultimately leading to lower crop yields.
The seminar, attended by esteemed personalities including Dr. Qamaruddin Jogi, Dr. Muhammad Nawaz Kandhro, and Dr. Naimatullah Leghari, provided valuable insights into improving rice production in Sindh province.
Dr. Reema Vistro also presented her research thesis to Vice Chancellor Dr. Fateh Marri, further contributing to the ongoing efforts to enhance rice production in the region.
