Kuala Lumpur: The Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) has successfully alleviated the local white rice supply shortage in Malaysia with its year-end rice harvest, according to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. While the local rice supply has improved, it has not yet reached a fully stable level due to high consumer demand.

Despite efforts to increase rice production, Malaysia’s rice self-sufficiency rate currently stands at only 65%. This shortage of local white rice has prompted increased demand as imported rice prices remain expensive.

To address this issue, Mada is currently in the process of replanting padi for next year’s supply. In addition, Minister Mohamad is encouraging city residents to participate in food security efforts by creating community gardens in suitable open spaces. Utilizing open spaces near residential areas for cash crop cultivation, such as chilli and lemongrass, can benefit the local community.

The government is also supporting community development projects, including agriculture, with an allocation of RM1 billion through the Prime Minister’s Department. These initiatives aim to enhance the community economy and promote sustainable farming practices.

Minister Mohamad advised those interested in urban farming activities to obtain approval from their respective local authorities to avoid any disruption to existing infrastructure. To further support the community economy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has allocated RM1 billion under the Madani Community Fund through Budget 2024. This funding will assist villages, longhouses, and People’s Housing Projects (PPRs) in starting economic projects like handicrafts or hydroponics.

By investing in local rice production and empowering communities to participate in agriculture, Malaysia aims to strengthen its food security and reduce reliance on imported rice. With continued efforts and support from both the government and the public, Malaysia can achieve a more stable and sustainable rice supply in the future.
