Pakistani commercial counselor visits Kenyan Chamber of Commerce headquarters
Mr. Patrick Nyangweso, the Chief Executive Officer of KNCCI, recently had a productive meeting with Ms. Adeela Youmis, the Commercial Counsellor at the High Commission of Pakistan. The purpose of their meeting was to explore strategies to strengthen the bilateral trade relations between Kenya and Pakistan. The discussions mainly focused on practical initiatives, advocacy efforts, and policy influence aimed at enhancing economic ties between the two nations.
During their meeting, several key points were raised regarding the current trade dynamics between Kenya and Pakistan. It was highlighted that Pakistan is currently the leading exporter of rice to Kenya, while Kenya ranks second in tea exports to Pakistan. Ms. Youmis expressed concerns about Kenya’s 35% excise duty on rice imports and emphasized the potential strains on trade relations if a proposed 2% increase is implemented. Both parties also discussed opportunities for bilateral trade agreements, with a particular emphasis on the agricultural, textiles, sportswear, and pharmaceutical sectors.
As a show of support and commitment to strengthening ties, Ms. Youmis extended an official invitation to KNCCI and its members to participate in the upcoming 2nd Food Agro Exhibition in Karachi, Pakistan. The exhibition is scheduled to take place from August 9th to 11th, 2024, and it aims to deepen trade connections and showcase the agricultural capabilities of both countries.
The courtesy call concluded with a firm commitment from KNCCI to engage in further discussions and explore potential collaborations to enhance economic cooperation between Kenya and Pakistan.
