Rice Exporters Set Sights on Kenyan Market
Kenya’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Nyambura Kamau, recently visited the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) in Karachi to discuss ways to strengthen trade and economic ties between the two countries. The REAP hosted a reception for Kamau and her team at REAP House Karachi, where they engaged in discussions on various issues and opportunities in the bilateral trade, particularly in the rice sector.
During the meeting, REAP Chairman Chela Ram Kewlani emphasized Pakistan’s reliability and trustworthiness as a supplier of rice, highlighting the country’s significant role in ensuring food security, especially in the African region. Kewlani also drew a comparison between Pakistan’s consistent rice exports and India’s intermittent restrictions. He further noted that Kenya is Pakistan’s largest trading partner in Africa, while Pakistan stands as one of the top importers of Kenyan tea.
Kewlani expressed optimism about the potential to further strengthen bilateral trade and expressed hope that the High Commissioner’s visit would prove valuable in achieving this goal. Former REAP Chairman Abdul Rahim Janoo emphasized the significance of the Kenyan market for Pakistani rice, highlighting the excellent and longstanding trading relations between the two countries.
During the meeting, REAP Kenya Committee Convener Rafique Suleman discussed the challenges faced by Pakistani rice exporters when exporting to Kenya and sought the High Commissioner’s assistance in resolving them. In response, the Kenyan High Commissioner expressed her commitment to collaborate with relevant authorities in her country to address the issues raised by Pakistani rice exporters. She also expressed her eagerness to promote mutual trade and economic cooperation between Kenya and Pakistan while exploring new avenues of collaboration.
This visit of Kenya’s High Commissioner to Pakistan signifies the importance of bilateral trade between the two countries, particularly in the rice sector. Both parties are dedicated to further enhancing their trade ties and have expressed their willingness to work together for the benefit of their respective economies.
