Kenyan Government Clears 1,300 Containers of Pakistani Rice at Zero-Tariff Rates

In a significant development for rice exporters, the Kenyan government has released 1,300 containers of Pakistani rice that were previously stuck at the Mombasa port. The Ministry of Commerce announced that these containers will be cleared at zero-tariff rates, providing a major relief for the exporters.

The issue was raised by Federal Commerce Minister, Jam Kamal Khan, who wrote a letter to the Kenyan trade ministry highlighting the urgency of the situation. The commerce ministry emphasized the need for timely handling of the rice shipment and expressed concerns over the delay.

The delay in the containers’ release was attributed to the Red Sea situation. Yemen claimed responsibility for launching attacks on three ships in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. However, shipping giant Maersk dismissed reports that one of its vessels was among the targets. Regardless, this incident resulted in the delay of the rice shipment.

The primary objective behind the release of these containers is to save Pakistani exporters from incurring significant losses due to the prolonged delay. The government recognized that the exporters were facing financial hardships and took swift action to resolve the issue.

To address the matter officially, the Kenyan government issued a special gazette notice on May 31, 2024. This notice acknowledges the release of the containers and highlights the decision to provide duty-free access for 34,414.5 metric tons of Grade 1 white-milled rice from Pakistan until November 30, 2024.

This development is expected to have a positive impact on bilateral trade between Pakistan and Kenya. It opens up new opportunities for rice exporters from Pakistan to contribute to Kenya’s demand for high-quality rice.

The Kenyan government’s decision reflects their recognition of the importance of fostering strong trade relations with Pakistan. By ensuring the timely clearance of the rice containers and offering duty-free access, Kenya has demonstrated its commitment to facilitating trade and supporting the exporters in these challenging times.
