87 Illegal Profiteers Slapped With Rs.0.6m Fines
In a continued effort to combat illegal profiteering and hoarding, the city administration in Karachi has taken action against 87 shopkeepers and vendors who were found guilty of overpricing essential items. As a result, fines totaling Rs602,000 have been imposed on these individuals. This crackdown is part of a larger initiative by Commissioner Karachi, Muhammad Saleem Rajput, to ensure that the prices of daily use items are in line with the rates set by the administration.
To enforce these regulations, assistant commissioners from different towns and sub-divisions of Karachi conducted inspections at various markets. They checked the prices of groceries, meat, milk, poultry, vegetables, and fruits, while also examining the shops of these vendors. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that both the sellers and buyers are treated fairly, with no one taking advantage of the situation.
The reports submitted to the commissioner’s office provide a district-wise breakdown of the fines that have been imposed. In district South, 13 illegal profiteers were fined a total of Rs83,000. In district East, fines amounting to Rs195,000 were imposed on 9 profiteers. District West saw 13 shopkeepers being fined Rs33,000 for their involvement in overpricing. Moving on to district Central, fines of Rs155,000 were imposed on 6 illegal profiteers. Similarly, in district Malir, 34 shopkeepers faced fines totaling Rs26,000. In district Korangi, fines amounting to Rs100,000 were imposed on 6 shopkeepers, and in district Keamari, 6 profiteers were fined Rs10,000.
By taking these measures, the city administration is sending a strong message that it will not tolerate illegal practices that unfairly burden the general public. This crackdown on overpricing serves as a reminder to all shopkeepers and vendors that they must adhere to the set prices of essential items and avoid exploiting the needs of the public during these challenging times.
