Colombia Halts Coal Exports to Israel in Protest

In a show of support against Israel’s aggressive actions in Gaza, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has declared the suspension of coal exports to Israel. As Israel’s primary coal supplier, Colombia had exported approximately $450 million worth of coal to Israel in 2023, according to the Israeli embassy in Bogota. Despite Petro’s government having severed diplomatic ties with Israel in May, the Israeli embassy in Colombia remains operational. President Petro, a vocal critic of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stated that the suspension of coal exports will continue “until the genocide stops.”

In a separate development, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an order in late May, in response to a case brought by South Africa, demanding an immediate halt to Israel’s offensive on the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The court also called for the release of hostages and the provision of unhindered humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territory. These measures were taken to address the dire situation faced by the Palestinians and promote peace and stability in the region.

Impact on Coal Export Ban

According to the Colombian government, the ban on coal exports to Israel will take effect five days after the decree is published in the official gazette. It is important to note that goods that have already been authorized for shipment will not be affected by this measure.
