Israel’s State Attorney has recently filed charges against Sabah al-Salem Haniyeh, the sister of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, for incitement and expressing solidarity with the militant group. Ismail Haniyeh is a prominent figure associated with Hamas and previously served as the head of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip from 2007 to 2014. The charges against his sister are connected to her alleged endorsement of Hamas’ October 7 attack.

Sabah al-Salem Haniyeh, aged 57 and residing in Tel Sheva, Israel, has been in custody since April 1, according to Israel’s justice ministry. The indictment states that after the deadly attack by Hamas in southern Israel, Haniyeh communicated with various individuals, including her brother, expressing admiration for the assault and advocating for further violence and ‘slaughter’.

One of the messages mentioned in the indictment reads, “Oh God, count them and kill them and don’t leave any of them, Oh God”.

The Hamas attack on October 7 resulted in the death of nearly 1,200 Israelis. This incident led to a significant escalation by Israel, triggering further hostilities in Gaza.

Ismail Haniyeh has been a central figure in Palestinian politics, particularly in Gaza, and has played a key role in the leadership of Hamas. He has also been involved in various political efforts and negotiations regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In 2007, following clashes between Hamas and Fatah, Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip, dividing the Palestinian territories into two separate entities: Hamas-controlled Gaza and Fatah-controlled areas in the West Bank. Haniyeh remained the de facto leader of Hamas in Gaza and established a Hamas government there.
