Indonesia Explores Sago Analog Rice as Alternative to Rice Amid Commodities Shortage
The Indonesian Industry Minister, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, has expressed that sago analog rice has the potential to serve as a viable substitute for rice, especially in times of rice shortage. With 5.5 million hectares of sago land, Indonesia has the ability to produce 34.3 million tons of sago starch.
“In order to address food shortages, the government is actively exploring alternative food sources. One of the most promising alternatives is sago, which can be developed as a primary carbohydrate source,” stated Kartasasmita on March 25, 2024.
Aside from being an alternative food source, sago analog rice is also considered a healthier option due to its high resistant starch content and low glycemic index, which can help prevent diabetes.
To support this initiative, the government is coordinating with relevant ministries and institutions to ensure a steady supply of raw materials. The goal is to establish reliable suppliers for raw sago that can meet the needs of industries.
On March 8, Putu Juli Ardika, the Director General of Agro Industry at the Ministry, highlighted the collaboration between the government and large industries in increasing the utilization of sago starch production. Currently, national sago starch industry utilization is below 30 percent due to limited access to raw materials.
In response, the government is working with the sago starch industry to develop an industrial business model that utilizes wet sago produced by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as raw material. This approach not only expands the range of industrial raw materials but also adds value to sago farmers.
