Indonesia’s Rice Output Declines in June and July, Compared to Last Year
Indonesia Expects Decrease in Rice Production Due to Rain Shortage
JAKARTA – The head of Indonesia’s food agency has announced that rice production in June and July is expected to decline compared to the previous year. Arief Prasetyo informed parliament that the delays in the crop cycle caused by reduced rainfall in the previous year have led to an estimated production of 2.01 million metric tons in June and 2.15 million tons in July.
This is a significant drop from the 2.79 million tons and 2.48 million tons produced in the respective months last year. The country’s food procurement agency, Bulog, has so far imported 1.2 million tons of rice this year, out of the total import quota of 3.6 million tons.
As reported, domestic rice production from January to July this year is 18.64 million tons, a 13.3% decrease from the same period last year. The country’s consumption during the same period was reported as 18 million tons.
The decline in rice production is attributed to the El Nino weather phenomenon, which resulted in lower rainfall and subsequently caused delays in the crop cycle, ultimately leading to reduced production. The effects of this shortage in rice production may have several implications on the country’s food security and availability.
