Indonesia Increases Rice Imports from Vietnam to Meet Growing Demand
Jakarta – The National Logistics Agency of Indonesia (Bulog) has recently secured a contract for the import of 1 million tonnes of rice. This import is part of an additional quota of 1.5 million tonnes allotted from countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan, and Myanmar. The aim of this supplementary import is to bolster the government’s rice reserves until 2024. Mokhamad Suyamto, the Director of Supply Chain and Public Services at Bulog, stated that the agency will import rice from any country that meets the required standards.
Currently, Bulog manages a rice stockpile of 1.45 million tonnes, and this quantity will be increased to meet the distribution demands for the upcoming year. The goal is to maintain the stability of domestic rice prices.
In the earlier part of this year, Bulog has already distributed a total of 885,000 tonnes of rice to stabilize the market. Additionally, as part of the food aid program for the underprivileged citizens across the country during September to November, a further 641,000 tonnes of rice were distributed.
This significant import of rice reflects Indonesia’s commitment to ensuring food security for its citizens. By diversifying its sources of rice import, the country can reduce its dependence on a single country and mitigate the risks associated with it. With this import, the government will be able to maintain stable rice prices and meet the food demands of the population.
