centre allows export of 20 MT of non-basmati rice to earthquake-stricken Nepal
The government of India has granted a one-time exemption from the export ban to the Indian Rice Exporters Federation. This exemption allows them to ship 20 metric tonnes of non-basmati white rice as a donation to Nepal to support those affected by the recent earthquake.
This exemption follows a similar one provided to Patanjali Ayurved last month. While the export of non-basmati white rice has been banned since July 20 to increase domestic supply, exports are allowed on a case-by-case basis for certain countries to meet their food security needs upon request.
The directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) stated in a notification that the Indian Rice Exporters Federation has been granted an exemption to export 20 MT of non-basmati white rice (semi-milled or wholly milled rice, whether or not polished or glazed) as a donation to Nepal earthquake victims.
In addition, the government has permitted the export of 2.40 lakh tonnes of non-basmati white rice to five countries: Comoros, Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt, and Kenya. The specific quantities allotted for each country are as follows: Comoros (20,000 MT), Madagascar (50,000 MT), Equatorial Guinea (10,000 MT), Egypt (60,000 MT), and Kenya (1,00,000 MT). These exports will be carried out through National Cooperative Exports Ltd.
Nepal recently experienced a 6.4 magnitude earthquake, resulting in the loss of 153 lives and injuries to over 250 individuals. The districts of Jajarkot and Rukum West in western Nepal were particularly affected, with approximately 8,000 public and private properties suffering damage.
India has taken the initiative to provide emergency relief materials to the earthquake-hit districts in Nepal, making it the first country to do so.
