India predicts rice production to surpass 100 million tonnes in 2023-24’s summer harvest
India Set to Produce 106.3 Million Tonnes of Rice in 2023-24 Crop Year
India, one of the largest rice exporters in the world, is expected to produce 106.3 million tonnes of rice during the summer-sown crop year of 2023-24, according to a statement by the agriculture ministry. This accounts for more than 85% of the country’s annual rice production. The overall summer-sown grains output, including rice, is estimated to be 148.6 million tonnes.
The ministry also predicted a lower output of summer-sown pulses at 7.1 million tonnes due to unfavorable climatic conditions compared to the previous year. Additionally, the country is expected to produce 21.5 million tonnes of oilseeds, 434.8 million tonnes of sugarcane, 22.5 million tonnes of maize, and 31.7 million bales of cotton during the 2023-24 crop year.
It is worth noting that India recently imposed a ban on rice exports, signaling the government’s concern about potential food inflation in light of the upcoming general election. This move reflects the caution exercised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration to ensure adequate food supply within the country.
