India has decided to permit the export of 95,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Nepal. Previously, there were restrictions on rice exports starting from July 20th, with only basmati rice being allowed to be imported by Nepal from India. This decision was announced by India’s Director General of Foreign Trade.

The export quota of 1.03 million tonnes of non-basmati white rice has been granted to seven countries, including Nepal, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivore, Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Seychelles. The specific quantity allocated for Nepal is 95,000 tonnes.

In an effort to discourage the import of non-basmati rice in August, India imposed a 20% export duty on non-basmati white rice. This recently granted export privilege is expected to alleviate the pressure on the local grain market.

For the past decade, Nepal has heavily relied on importing rice and paddy from India to compensate for its food deficit.
