India Lifts Ban on Non-Basmati White Rice Exports to Specific Countries
India Lifts Restrictions on Non-Basmati White Rice Export to Selected Countries
India has made the decision to lift restrictions on the export of non-basmati white rice to certain countries, according to a government notification released on Wednesday. This move comes after India previously implemented a ban on non-basmati white rice exports in July. Additionally, the country had later imposed a 20% duty on exports of parboiled rice.
The countries eligible for these rice exports include Nepal, Cameroon, Malaysia, Philippines, Seychelles, Ivory Coast, and the Republic of Guinea. This decision by India will help alleviate the pressure on the global rice market and potentially reduce prices to a certain extent.
India’s ban on the export of non-basmati white rice had caused a sharp increase in global rice prices. Several global organizations and countries had urged India to lift the restrictions, highlighting the risk of a potential food crisis. Even the International Monetary Fund had encouraged India to remove the export restrictions on certain categories of rice, emphasizing the impact on global inflation.
The Indian government, however, stated that the ban was implemented to ensure sufficient availability of rice in the domestic market and to reduce prices. Now, with the decision to start exporting non-basmati white rice to the aforementioned countries, India aims to address the concerns of the global market and contribute to price stabilization.
