government rejects proposal for minimum export price on agricultural products
Rewritten Article:
The government of India has made it clear that there are no plans to impose a Minimum Export Price (MEP) on all agricultural products. Rajesh Agrawal, Additional Secretary of the Department of Commerce, addressed this issue during a press briefing, stating that there is no intention to scrutinize exports of all agricultural products.
Agrawal emphasized that the government’s focus is not on implementing an MEP for all agricultural products or reviewing them from an export perspective. He clarified that there are no such decisions or plans in place.
While there has been concern about the inter-ministerial committee, which typically deals with MEP for onions but recently discussed basmati rice, Agrawal clarified that this expanded mandate does not mean a comprehensive review of all agricultural products. He made it clear that the committee’s role is not to examine every agricultural product and recommend an MEP for each one.
Despite the ban on the export of non-basmati white rice, India has allocated a significant 13 lakh tonnes of rice for export to over 14 countries. This allocation aims to address food security issues in these recipient nations.
