Income Tax officials recently concluded their search at the rice mill belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Tanmoy Ghosh in Bengal’s Bankura district. The search operation, which lasted for 52 hours, was accompanied by a contingent of central armed police forces. During this time, the premises were sealed off, preventing anyone from entering or exiting.

The investigation is aimed at uncovering any irregularities in the public distribution system that Ghosh may have benefitted from. Other aspects of Ghosh’s business, including a liquor dealership, are also being looked into. It is worth noting that Ghosh switched from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP before the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections. He won the election from the Bishnupur seat in Bankura district on a BJP ticket but later joined the TMC, though he has not officially resigned from the BJP.

Suvendu Adhikari, the BJP leader of the Opposition in the legislative assembly, commented on Ghosh’s ambiguous political status and suggested that people wait to see where the income tax department’s investigation leads. The TMC’s state general secretary, Kunal Ghosh, criticized the raid, claiming that federal agencies were deliberately targeting the ruling party in Bengal ahead of the 2024 elections.

This income tax raid on Ghosh’s rice mill follows a similar action taken against TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Banerjee received a summon notice from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on his birthday, November 7, and was asked to visit their office for questioning regarding a bribe-for-job scam in the education department.

The income tax officials have also sent a notice to Akhil Giri, the minister for correctional homes, who is a rival of Adhikari in East Midnapore.
